Australian Government backs Aboriginal-led clean energy engagement project
Ngalgarra Resources Indigenous Corporation (NRICorp) has been awarded funding under the Australian Government's First Nations Clean Energy Advice Grants Program – Round 1 to deliver the Barapa Clean Energy Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) Workshop Series across Barapa Barapa Country.
The project prioritises culturally informed engagement and self-determined decision-making, ensuring Barapa Barapa Traditional Owners have access to independent and trusted information before engaging with proponents or government processes.
Through a series of culturally safe workshops and yarning circles, Traditional Owners will have opportunities to build their understanding of renewable energy developments, cultural heritage considerations, governance, community benefit agreements, employment opportunities and the long-term impacts of clean energy projects on Country and future generations.
Chief Executive Officer of Ngalgarra Resources Indigenous Corporation, Juanita Halden, welcomed the Australian Government's support.
"This project is about ensuring Traditional Owners have access to trusted, independent information so they can make informed decisions about developments that may affect their Country, culture and communities.
As Australia transitions towards a clean energy future, it is essential that Aboriginal people are supported to participate in those conversations through culturally safe, community-led engagement that respects our knowledge, cultural authority and right to self-determination.
We are proud to deliver a project that strengthens community knowledge, governance capability and confidence while ensuring Aboriginal people are well informed before engaging with proponents or government processes."
Quality First
The project will deliver 6–8 community workshops and yarning circles across Barapa Barapa Country, supported by independent legal, technical, environmental and governance specialists. Participants will also have access to plain-language resources and opportunities to seek independent professional advice throughout the project.
Stronger together
The workshop series is designed to strengthen community understanding of:
- Renewable energy developments, including solar, battery storage, transmission infrastructure and wind energy;
- Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC);
- Environmental and cultural impacts;
- Governance and negotiation processes;
- Employment and economic participation opportunities; and
- Long-term impacts on Country and future generations.
